The Temagami Youth Leadership Program brings together youth ages 13-15 from the greater Temagami Community for a fun and empowering 12 day adventure on the land. The goal of the program is to enrich participants and the community by sharing the challenges of wilderness travel with an emphasis on personal growth and leadership development.
The program starts on August 2, 2017 at The Northwaters Island Base Camp (Island 1088). After getting to know one another, learning the skills necessary for a canoe trip, discussing individual and group goals and expectations, and planning a route, the group of 8 – 10 participants, along with 2 leaders, will embark on a 10 day canoe trip. They will travel through n’DakiMenan learning from the land and one another as they work together to meet the challenges of wilderness travel in a spirit of respect, understanding and friendship.
The program will be facilitated by seasoned Northwaters & Langskib leaders using methods and techniques developed over the past 40 years of providing similar experiences for youth and organizations from all over the world. Leaders are trained and certified in wilderness first aide and lifesaving. Northwaters is accredited by the Ontario Camping Association.
On August 13th, the final day of the program, participants’ families and community members will gather at Northwaters to welcome the youth back from their trip. We will share a meal, stories from trail and celebrate the learnings and accomplishments of the participants.
The Temagami Youth Leadership Program is jointly funded by Northwaters & Langskib Wilderness Programs and The Temagami Community Foundation. Consequently, each participant is responsible for only $100 of the total tuition. The program seeks boys and girls ages 13-15 who are, or have the potential to be, leaders in their communities. The program seeks balanced participation from the various factions of our community. 2-4 places each will be awarded to members of the Bear Island, year-round, and seasonal community.
Applications are reviewed and decisions made on a first come first serve basis.
